Commissioned Artwork

That Favorite Place

Whether it be a particular bend of a river where the brown trout run strong, a quiet place in the forest that holds your prayers, or a golden field full of memories, we all have our favorite places. To honor these places, I offer fully unique commissioned photography.

I am based in Northern California and regularly find myself tending fire in the Redwoods, Point Reyes, Yosemite, Mount Shasta, Tahoe, Mendocino, Joshua Tree, West Marin, and the California coast. I also find myself in Arizona, the Southwest, New England, and Nantucket, and will always travel for commissioned opportunities.

Step 1: Vision Discussion & Consultation

The first step in the process is about you and the land. Generally, this is a time to share about your connection to the land and what called you to it. Shared memories or times with the particular landscape will help inform the final print. For instance, in capturing Treeforts of Childhood (below right), my memories were of a fort flooded in light, joy, dirt, childhood boys, timelessness. This is what I wanted to capture in revisiting the great Sycamore decades later, so I made sure to visit on a blue-skied day in search of that dappled childhood sunlight. Connections such as these help inform the photographic process and approach to be taken with the particular place.

During this discussion, we will form a vision for the image and plan the process accordingly. I will provide an overview of my photographic process, the camera equipment used, the technical components, and the available presentation options, including handmade alternative print processes. You are welcome to learn as much, or as little, about the photographic process as you would like.

Step 2: Field Visit to the Land

I want you to be a part of the process. It is a special experience to immerse yourself in the process of making an image with a large format film camera. Given this, I highly encourage one to accompany the field visit. This is an opportunity to create another everlasting memory with the land, and is often a place to express gratitude, relive memories, hold prayer, or share stories.

Step 3: Making of the Image

I will bring my camera with me on the initial field visit. If no images are made on the day of the initial field visit, I will return when the weather conditions, environment and mood are appropriate for the envisioned final piece. I welcome you to return with me any time in which I do make a visit. You can stay and be apart of making the image, and even be the one to pull the shutter release.

The final product will include up three (3) unique compositions of the subject, depending on personal preferences, made using Kodak Tmax-100 Professional film, hand developed in replenished Kodak Xtol, and professionally drum-scanned for highest quality, sharpness and resolution.

Step 4: Final Print & Presentation

The outcome of the final print is completely in your hands. I offer three printing options for commissioned artwork including (1) an archival pigment print on the fine art photography paper, (2) a silver gelatin print, and (3) a platinum palladium print. The archival pigment prints will run the same price as the other images shown throughout the Galleries.

The silver gelatin and platinum palladium prints are one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces of art that use traditional darkroom techniques. These prints are timeless heirlooms, cherished by art collectors, and the perfect, meaningful gift given their uniqueness, archival longevity, and tonal range. I highly recommend those looking for commissioned artwork to make it a generational piece of artwork and select a traditional silver gelatin or platinum palladium print.
